Aggregate Fruits

Aggregate fruits are fruits that grow from a single flower but with many ovaries. One ovary may develop into a small fruit, which is called a drupelet or fruitlet, and the small fruits aggregate to form a single large fruit.

Examples of Aggregate Fruits:

  • Strawberries – These are one of the most well-known aggregate fruits. The small "seeds" on the surface of a strawberry are actually individual fruits, each containing a seed.
  • Blackberries – Blackberries consist of many smaller drupelets (each a mini-fruit) that come together to form the larger fruit.
  • Raspberries – Like blackberries, raspberries are made up of multiple smaller fruits (called drupelets) that cluster together.
  • Mulberries – Though sometimes mistaken for a different type of fruit, mulberries are also aggregate fruits. They develop from several smaller flowers on a single stem.
